One plan, many rooms

About 7,300 sq.ft of a 4 BHK, planned as a set of rooms that have to work on an ordinary day and still hold a gathering.

The interiors are for a residence at Fortune Sonthaliya Sky Villas. The brief is not a single room. It is a living and drawing area, a pooja room, a home theatre, a bar, a dry kitchen and a wet kitchen with a utility, storage, a servant room, and the bedrooms. At this size, the risk is a sequence of unrelated finishes. The work is to keep them one house.

The rooms people cross every day

The living, dining, and kitchen are the daily plan. Textured paint gives the walls depth without asking for a material that cannot be repaired. In the kitchen, the elevation wall is tiled, so the surface that takes water and oil is the one that can be cleaned. Grey cabinetry, a stone island, and a window on the work wall keep the room bright and practical. The living room opens toward the dining room, so a meal and a conversation are not in different buildings.

The entrance foyer sets the tone before any of that: a long stone floor, a lit shelf, and a view through to the rooms beyond. A foyer that is only a corridor wastes the first moment of the house. Here it is a room with a job.

Bedrooms, then the rooms for a gathering

The bedrooms are not copies of one another. The master bedroom uses wall panels and a stone headwall. Another bedroom takes a stone-textured finish as its accent. A third sets tiles into a painted bed wall. Each backdrop is a decision about what that room is for, not a catalogue applied three times.

The theatre and the bar are the other temperament of the same plan. The theatre is held in lighter tones, with the screen as the focus and daylight controlled at the side. The bar uses onyx, a central island with chairs, and a wall unit with mirror and gold detailing for the bottles. They sit beside the quieter rooms without pretending to be them.

An interior of this size succeeds when a person can walk from the kitchen to a bedroom to the theatre and still know it is one residence. The finishes change. The plan does not fall apart.
